Thrill of the Chill

by Hella ~ January 18th, 2004

Knowing that it’d be pretty dang cold outside and that the wind would be a factor, I put on my cold weather gear (which consists entirely of a pair of over-the-ankle socks instead of my usual rolltops). I simply cannot stand to burn up in pants or a long-sleeved shirt so it was shorts and a t-shirt for me in the 45 degree windy weather.

I headed out to my first choice of trails, the rocky 3.5 mile out-and-back, only to find it closed. I suspect the rainfall in the past two days prompted the authorities to keep this area shut down. So I journeyed a couple miles up the road to the more popular trail. I put in my usual 4 mile loop.

I took the Leona Divide trail shoes back out for another test run. This time I had arch supports in both feet. What is strange is that these shoes seem to feel better without the added support. My feet are more sore today than yesterday.

I pushed the pace on this run since there were several people out today despite the cold weather. I imagine it is one of the faster runs I have done in a while and I also did not stop the entire time. The sides of my legs were very tired throughout most of the run. I’m starting to think that perhaps this is due to the different stride brought on by the new shoes. They are more roomy, heavier, and just generally different than my road shoes. I’m going to have to keep trying them out to determine if I really like them.
