Rental Mania
by Hella ~ February 22nd, 2004I’ve fallen behind on some rentals lately so I decided to make up for lost time today. The weather was dreary and it seemed like a good day for movies. I stopped by Blockbuster and picked up Runaway Jury, Lost in Translation, Freaky Friday, and Uptown Girls.
Runaway Jury was the first one I watched. I’ve never seen any of the John Grisham movies but I was very impressed with this one. I’m quite a John Cusack fan (especially from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) and he did a good job here. The entire movie was enjoyable and I think it had a great ending.
Sadly, I watched Lost in Translation. I haven’t seen one this bad in a very long time … perhaps since I caught Dreamcatcher in the theater. Maybe I need to watch this one again, but all I saw were two frustrated people in the same situation that never really resolved their tensions?
Freaky Friday was a pretty good one. I found myself concentrating to understand whether mom was speaking for mom or whether she was speaking for the daughter. Some cheese was to be expected, but it was funny.
Uptown Girls was the last one I watched tonight. Dakota Fanning was cast perfectly and she met my expectation though it was a little more heavy than I anticipated with Brittany Murphy. The message is good even if this is mostly a silly movie.

Lost in Translation was my life in Japan–as it was most everyone I knew there. The whole point is that it’s not got the typical canned plot line. I took the fact that in a society like that, you’re always on the outside–and even strange foreigners you’d never associate with you’re forced to come into contact with, understand, and even fall in love with. Lord knows it happened to me there.

Runaway Jury was pretty good but I still like The Firm best of all, as far as Grisham movies go. Lost in Translation was great in terms of atmosphere but if you expect a clearly defined plot with crescendo, climax, resolution, etc. the script doesn’t really seem to care about that.
