Slump in Readings
by Hella ~ February 27th, 2004My b-school application fever has finally worn off. Soon after learning of my admission to Wharton, I decided that I needed to brush up on some b-school related reading. I ordered Liar’s Poker, eBoys, and The Fast Track and quickly buzzed through the first one, but things aren’t buzzing quite so much these days.
Shortly after picking up eBoys, I’ve already lost interst. I think I made it through 3 or 4 chapters but I haven’t touched it since. I guess coming from Liar’s Poker, I was hoping for a little more humor that would make for a quick read. Maybe I’m just less interested in the subject of venture capital? I’ve already done my time in the not-for-profit (read: startup) world and going back after the MBA isn’t appealing.
The Fast Track has some nice information. In my now MBA-centric world, I forgot that consulting, i-banking, and sales and trading are also careers for the undergraduate and I should not have been so surprised to see information geared to these “less experienced” job seekers. It has been interesting to read through the tips, personal stories, and other data about these three fields and it’s becoming a lot more obvious that I don’t want to go anywhere near i-banking.

I really enjoyed Liar’s Poker, but I haven’t read any others. I also would like to do some pre-MBA readings, but I haven’t settled on a list.

You should read “Reminiscences of a stock operator” by Le Fevre. Inspiring book about trading.
