PennKey

by Hella ~ March 8th, 2004

The matriculation process has now slowed to a waiting game, but I got an important mailing today from ISC Data Administration. Inside the envelope was a single page of instructions on how to claim a PennKey. Though the instructions are explicit, I had to do a little digging as there is an unmentioned step between 1) and 2).

Between these steps, I actually had to click on “A description of the online registration process”, the first bullet under item 3. This took me to a new page where I clicked the “PennKey home page” link under “Ready to register?”. The link that should have been mentioned in step 1 is: http://www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey/index.html.

Setup was pretty easy after this. So I figured I would test it out. I tried the demo but I was greeted with this nice error:

An error occurred - cannot generate a websec token. Please contact ISC for help.

I even waited more than the five minutes suggested. I also tried a password I knew to be invalid and got a different error. I guess it just doesn’t want to work for me.

Now it’s time to wait on the Financial Aid letter that’ll let me know how much damage I can do.

The needless complexity of the pre-matriculation bureaucracy (both online and offline) is astounding at Wharton. Don’t worry, it gets better. ;)

PennKey, PennID, and PIN all sound way too similar. I figured they could at least get the directions right, but apparently not!

Running into exactly the same problem myself. I’ve tried altering my security settings and giving rosetta.upenn.edu a higher level of access to my comp but it doesn’t seem to have helped any. Let me know if you manage to get this figured out. Thanks.
