The Twenty-One Balloons
by Hella ~ March 21st, 2004I was in San Antonio a couple times over the weekend and made a quick stop in Barnes & Noble to pick up a book I had read back in sixth grade. I knew I’d have some free time to spend reading but I didn’t have my copy of Angels & Demons with me. I figured a kid’s book could be knocked out before I had time to regret I hadn’t brought my current Dan Brown thriller.
I can’t say I remembered reading the book back then but I do remember my reading teacher saying Krakatoa over and over. I also remembered a few of the illustrations, all of which were done by the author.
This is quite literally a little jewel of a book and it was nice to clip through some light reading. The book reminds me of several of my favorite stories as a kid and I think I’ll probably make it a habit of picking a few of them up.
Interestingly, the author points out that just before publication, he discovered that his work was strikingly similar to The Diamond as Big as the Ritz by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I’ll have to check that story out.
