Pat’s King of Steaks
by Hella ~ April 14th, 2004After exiting the PATCO station, I headed directly south on 9th Street. Since I’d read about Ryan’s recent cheesesteak taste test, I was anxious to see what it was all about for myself. Many (10-15?) blocks down the road, I spotted the big Geno’s neon signage and knew I was almost there.
Soon after passing Geno’s it was evident that Pat’s had a longer line so I decided to go with Ryan’s advice and take my chances at ordering. They recommend a three step (1. oninons or not, 2. cheese, 3. get your money out) process and are pretty particular if you mess it up. The instructions even say to go to the back of the line if you fumble. Somehow I think if it is busy, they hold to this. Be sure you only order your sandwich at the window on the right, as they will bark at you to place french fry and soda orders at the next window.
There is a stone in the walkway outside the place (near the french fry window) that claims Sylvester Stallone stood in front of Pat’s in 1976 when filming Rocky. Several of the patrons made it a point to notice the spot and make their friends aware.
The place is obviously a local hot spot since celebrity photos adorn the underside of the awning. A Philly cop was even bringing his out-of-town friends by even though he’d already eaten.
I opted for a provolone and peppers “without” (no onions) combination and had a side of cheese fries. The cheese whiz is actually really good on the fries and I wish I’d gotten it on my sandwich.
Interestingly, this place is located on 9th just between Passyunk and Wharton. During my time at Wharton, I’m sure I’ll be back here a few times.
It’s worth pointing out that the building just to the east of Pat’s, across the vacant lot, displays a sign that says a second location will soon be opening in Atlantic City at the corner of Atlantic and Pennsylvania. The store is proud to proclaim that the Philly location is their only one, so I guess they’re going to have to change the wrappers, cups, and other marketing stuff.
This was my first trip into South Philadelphia and I am starting to like this place much better. Though this area has a lot of charm, I’m happy I’ve decided to live more near City Hall and the museum district.

They say you don’t have a real cheesesteak until you do it with whiz…

A couple of other recommendations: Jim’s is pretty good (on South street), and Abner’s (next to Chili’s on 38th/Chestnut) isn’t bad, and best of all it’s near school. But get Provologne if you go to Abners, because they don’t put enough whiz on…
