Monk’s Cafe

by Hella ~ April 18th, 2004

After Wharton Welcome Weekend was over, I went for a Sunday brunch at this Belgian Cafe and Beer Emporium. Several people I’d met had mentioned they wanted to try it and one even stopped in only to find a 45 minute wait on Friday night and went elsewhere. At around 11:30 on Sunday morning, though, it was almost empty. I asked the waitress about that and she figured that most people were outside enjoying the great weather.

I ordered a Brussels burger which comes with bacon and cheddar. I also went for the fresh cute frites that are served with a side of bourbon mayonaise. The burger was delicious, in large part due to the fresh roll it was served on. The fries, fresh, small, and just the right amount of crispy, were also great and the portion size was more than plenty. The special mayo was great but after a while, it started to overwhelm with flavor.

They are known for mussels. On the menu it says they serve only the highest quality and freshest mussels caught in the cold Atlantic waters just off the coast of Prince Edward Island. A variety of flavorings are available including a Thai Curry seasoning.

The inside of the place is really neat. The booths are actually small churchlike pews and there is a lot of wood everywhere which makes the interior pretty dark. I think I might have even heard some church hymns being played on an organ and piped over the speakers. Belgian maps and other memorabilia deck the walls and there is a pretty nice bar right when you walk in.

This is definitely a place I’ll return. It’s probably pretty loud when it’s busy as the seating is tight and limited but I’m sure the food will taste just as good. It will also be a good place to return for brunch as I want to try their Belgian waffle and perhaps a mimosa made with fresh squeezed OJ and Hoegaarden, a Belgian ale.
