Philadelphia Revisited

by Hella ~ April 20th, 2004

Well things were growing this time (grass, trees, flowers) … and so the city grows on me just like everyone said it would. Instead of sewer and smoke in the air, there was actually the scent of blooming trees, honeysuckle, and wisteria. A trip up to the Art Museum area and Fairmount Park really helped me notice that there’s more to this place than gray and brown, cold and colder. In fact, the weather seemed very warm and I enjoyed many days of clear blue skies and lots of sunshine. On Saturday and Sunday, herds of people came out of the woodwork to lounge and sunbathe in Rittenhouse Square.

I also hit some good restaurants and bars this time. To get to know the city and surrounding area, I walked all over the place, rode the SEPTA, the PATCO, and New Jersey Transit. Though I can’t say Atlantic City was the best place I’ve ever been, it’s nice to have it as an option and I hear students make it out there occasionally.

I wound up getting just the housing I wanted and I’m going to have easy access to Reading Terminal Market, the park near City Hall, Broad Street, and the Museum District. Rittenhouse Square is a short walk away. Though I’ll be futher from campus than most people, I really don’t mind the extra walk and it’s really easy to take the Green Line right over to 37th Street since it picks up less than 2 blocks away. There will be plenty of Wharton students in this building and a few have already gotten in touch to let me know they’re happy I’ll be a new neighbor.

WWW rocked!!! The first night, we’re all hanging at a MBA pub, and I recognize Rosemaria Martinelli. I’d never met her before, but I’d seen her on the Follies video clip. I went over to introduce myself. Her face lit up, she asked how my flight was from Chicago, and asked where my wife was–asked for her by name, which as you can imagine, made her day. Then I introduced her to another admit–same story. As I remember it, she even knew that dude’s KIDS’ names!!!

From my first phone inquiry two years ago to being admitted in this March, I have also been extremely impressed with Wharton. I have never called the office and not talked to a person. Not only have they personally answered my questions, but they have also followed up with personal calls to provide me with additional information. Their customer service and genuine concern reflects the school’s focus on creating a close-knit community. Every student, alumnus, and even new-admit I have spoken with further reinforces this extremely compelling feeling of community—the admissions office does a great job of identifying and admitting individuals that positively contribute to this.

Damn, that picture makes the city look good. Where’d you take that?? And please send me instructions to find the place in the city where the air is filled with the scent of wisteria and honeysuckles :)
