Pietro’s Coal Oven Pizzeria
by Hella ~ April 20th, 2004I was in the mood to try another local place for dinner on Sunday night so I headed over to this place near 17th and Walnut. I was originally attracted to the place because they have a limited amount of bistro type outdoor seating. I got seated right away in the main dining room directly over an A/C vent and it kept me nice and chilly.
I shared the Roasted Vegetables appetizer that was very fresh. It consisted of artichokes, zucchini, eggplant, red peppers, and sweet peppers that were stuffed with prosciutto and cheeses (goat, feta, and parmesan). The entire dish was swimming in extra virgin olive oil. While I didn’t care for the taste of the cheese, it was overall a very fresh and high quality starter.
I ordered a calzone for the main course and choose to add roma tomatoes and Bermuda onions for $2 each. Again, this dish was very fresh and delicious but I think I should have tried one of their pizzas instead. I just didn’t feel hungry enough for a small (13″). The meal is also served with fresh rolls and there is a nice decorative bottle of olive oil with herbs inside on every table.
One downside that I think was isolated was the service. My tea was usually empty, the order was taken in two parts by two different servers, and it was generally more than 10 minutes between visits from the waitstaff. Several patrons near me were complaining about the painfully slow service and one party behind me sat for over 20 minutes before anyone ever took their drink orders. I’m willing to overlook this and give it another try because everything here is so fresh and delicious.
