Furniture Strategy

With the moving quotes all over the place, I’ve done something I didn’t ever see myself doing: I’ve sold a lot of my furniture. I placed an ad yesterday and have had a buzz of inquiries about everything I’ve listed. Today I had a visitor stop by and check the stuff out. I ended up making a deal on the whole bedroom suite and much of the furnishings in the living room. I’ve got a big armoire, the dining set, and a bedside table left. I’m hoping I can find a buyer for this stuff, too.

In the end I decided it wasn’t worth the hassel, stress, and cost of transporting all these big heavy items across the country. I’m planning to head over to the IKEA in Houston right before I leave and load up on a bunch of flat-packed, easy-to-move, inexpensive things. I already have a spare bed and frame so I won’t have to replace that item.

It’s funny how much my views on the move have changed, but it feels good to be letting go of this stuff.

I have an apartment full of IKEA furniture that I have been pretty happy with. One word of caution: About 10% of the stuff I bought from IKEA came slightly damaged or missing directions or parts. You may want to go through the immense pain of unpacking and checking everything you buy before you take it up to Philly (or even back to Austin) and realize that the end table has a superficial but noticeable scratch across the surface and the dresser has no directions…

My favorite thing about IKEA has to be the instructions that have 73 steps but not a single written word! Wait, maybe it’s that one single magic tool that assembles the entire thing. Better yet, maybe it’s how they can fit a night stand in purse sized box. Anyhow, I’ve bought their stuff in the past, but thank you for the disclaimer!

why don’t you IKEA in the northeast ? dunno about philly but there is an IKEA in NJ (exit 13A :) about an hour or so from Philly. That’s where I drive from Boston to do my shopping :-)

I think the location in Conshohocken is closer. Mapquest clocks it around 15 miles from Center City. I’m going to be in Houston dropping off a vehicle and possibly picking up the rental truck. I was thinking I’d stop at this location first and if they didn’t have all the items I wanted (and stockouts are common from my experience), I could visit a store in the northeast. Also, I want to minimize the number of times I need to reserve the freight elevator. After 1600 miles, I don’t think the idea of making a “quick” trip to IKEA will sound appetizing.

The Conshohocken IKEA is brand new so maybe they’ll have more cool stuff.

I’m not sure where Conshohocken is, but the Ikea website says a Philly Ikea is opening up “this summer.”
