Not Fun-Knee

by Hella ~ May 27th, 2004

I went out this afternoon for a run even though I knew it was supposed to be hotter than it has been. Some clouds had rolled in early this evening so the sun wasn’t beating down quite as much. All in all, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. However, about 3.5 miles into my loop, I felt an increasing pain in my right knee. I’ve had trouble with this in the past so I decided to take it really easy and cut the run off at 4 miles. I was also feeling some pain on the inside of my legs that can easily be confused with shin splints. I don’t think that’s what it is but I’d rather it not be there. I’m wondering if all this discomfort could be an injury about to happen or just a side effect of my increased mileage this month. At the end of the run I was wondering if my shoes might be on the worn out side, but I’ve only got 165 miles on them. Shoes are usually good for at least 300-400 miles. These have been through 2 really muddy runs and a couple of washes in the machine so maybe that has affected them. The jury’s still out because I’m not giving up on them yet.

Shoes really only last 300 to 400 miles? Do you know if that holds true for walking as well? Since I walk 1.7 miles a day every day, that means I’m putting approximately 50 miles per month on my shoes.

It’s just a general rule to watch out for. You can usually tell when your shoes lose their bounce and it’s time to replace them. However, if you start to experience foot or leg pain, it’s always a good idea to review how much mileage is on the shoes.
