Limbo

by Hella ~ June 14th, 2004

I’m really not liking this limbo phase. I’ve got things I’m trying to wrap up at work, my apartment is starting to look like the movers have already come (because I’m selling most everything; only an armoire left!), and I’ll soon have 2 of everything: bank accounts, addresses, utility bills, leases, etc. I guess the hassels of moving are officially here.

I still haven’t decided exactly how to move what remaining items I’ll be taking with me. I’d really like to pull a trailer behind an SUV since that would give the cats room enough for their large pen instead of their small carrier. However, I’m not sure that I can find a trailer large enough for my mattress and two armchairs and the rest of the boxes. This means I’ll have to do the regular moving truck option. If I do this, I want to get the smallest truck possible since it surely has to be the easiest to drive.

I noticed recently on Budget’s site that they have moving specials between particular pairs of states. One of them happens to be TX/NJ. I checked out how much I could save but it looks negligible from the rates I was looking at previously.

While on vacation last week, I made it a point to talk to people at the resort about which routes to drive. It’s funny because I ended up hearing all sorts of conflicting opinions about how I should or should not go near/around the D.C. area. One person said the turnpike in Pennsylvania has a lot of construction but I wonder about that advice. I’ve heard good things about the I-81 route through Virginia and I’m learning more towards taking that up through Hagerstown and into Pennsylvania. Then I’ll catch 76 into Philadelphia.

Last week’s 1100 mile drive didn’t seem all that bad but I didn’t have 2 screaming cats to talk to all the way. Sure, the mountains in the eastern U.S. are not as formidable as the Rockies but it’s going to be a drive I’m totally unfamiliar with. At this point, I’m considering splitting it up into 4 days if I can find places to stay that will allow the cats. Surely this won’t be as big of deal as I think it is?

DO NOT drive on 95 around DC… unless you want what should be a 2 hour drive to be a 5 hour drive.
