Truck Rental
by Hella ~ June 21st, 2004I broke down and reserved a moving truck with Penske because the rate dropped so low. I’d been looking at rates of around $1000 not including any extras (damage waiver, cargo insurance, dolly, furniture pads, etc.) but today it got down to $819. They also offer a 10% discount with an online booking. With the Smart Kart (dolly), a dozen furniture pads, taxes, fees, the Limited Damage Waiver, and Personal Accident Insurance, I’m sitting at around $1010.
I went with Penske in the end because their trucks are a maximum of 42-months old and they offer unlimited mileage on one-way moves. I don’t want any hidden costs and hopefully the truck will be clean and relatively new.

I reserved a Penske too for my move to Hyde Park (Chicago GSB bound). And after reading the fine print on the reservation realized you are allowed at least 1 date move for free. So to game the system…reserve for the cheapest day of the month and then call in and change the date. It could save you a few hundred dollars.
