Arrival

by Hella ~ July 19th, 2004

It’s been a few days since I got here but I’ve been without internet this whole time. The phone company will make its third attempt at installing service for me tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I’m thankful someone has an open wireless network in the building :)

The drive to Philadelphia from Texas went very well overall. There was only one mishap with the moving truck and that was backing it into the loading dock. There wasn’t much clearance on either side and I caught the bottom of the bumper as I was trying to line it up. There wasn’t any damage but I had the limited damage waiver anyhow.

Nashville was interesting. As I rolled into town a massive thunderstorm was also making its way through the area. There were Class 1 Hurricane winds of 70-80 mph and it was a struggle to keep the truck on the road at times. Debris was flying through the air and I honestly thought I was in the middle of a tornado. I got to the hotel without missing any turns and made it safely inside. I left out the next morning early and that let me get to King of Prussia, PA instead of Harrisburg as originally planned.

I had a 12-noon to 4pm slot in the freight elevator so I spent Thursday morning fumbling around the Conshohocken area along I-76 looking for the IKEA store. I finally managed to make the right turns and get to the store. I spent about 2 hours inside picking out all my new stuff since all the furniture back in Austin was sold before the move. After rearranging all the stuff inside the moving truck, all the new flat-packed items fit … somehow! A quick swing back by the hotel to checkout and pickup the cats and I was on my way to Center City.

The arrival in Philadelphia went well and driving the big truck wasn’t near as bad as I’d thought. However, a surprise setback awaited at the loading dock when I discovered that the person scheduled from 8am to 12-noon had arrived late and was just started to take her things up the freight elevator. A long 2.5 hours later, I was finally able to start hauling my crap up to the apartment. It was a long first night but everything is much much better now that all the IKEA stuff is assembled. I now have an appreciation for what it must be like to be a Christmas elf at the North Pole on December 24th.

So today I thought I’d press my luck and venture over to Campus Computers to try and pick up my laptop. Sure enough, it’s not ready yet but it will be tomorrow … at least that’s what I thought when I left. After walking back from campus I got a phone call letting me know that the memory upgrade I’d ordered for the laptop was on back order and wouldn’t be in by tomorrow. Now I have the option of getting the laptop tomorrow and having to take it back when the memory is ready or just waiting until it’s in stock and installed before I pick it up. I guess with the move having gone so well I shouldn’t be so bothered by such a small bump.

It’s good to hear you made it safely. I can imagine the nightmare of driving a moving truck through city center. I thought it was freaky just driving a car around. *shivers*

I am glad everything went ok though.
