Pre Pre-Term Nightlife
by Hella ~ July 29th, 2004As more people roll into town, the get togethers are getting bigger. Tuesday, some of us started the evening with a dinner at Monk’s Cafe. I’ve been there several times and knew it can get pretty crowded so I showed up early with a couple friends and put my name down on the list. As soon as six of us were there, we moved from the bar to a table right at the door and started chatting over a few beers. More classmates arrived during dinner and they stood around us until the hostess decided we were taking up too much room and asked the ones standing to move back to the bar area. We finished up our meal and decided to meet up later at Irish Pub.
I got to Irish Pub a bit after everyone had agreed to meet. There was already a good turnout and our group was situated right next to a two person bar table surrounded by a cameraman and person holding a light up for the camera. We figured out that they were filming part of The Real World Philadelphia. We had a couple drinks and then headed back out into the drizzling rain and humidity (what is with this nasty weather?) and called it a night.
Last night people were gathering at Fado’s around 9pm. I showed up around 10pm and snuck in just before all the soccer fans invaded the place. Manchester United and Celtic (at least I think that’s the two teams) had played in town earlier and after the game, the fans were ready to get rowdy. The whole place quickly became a sea of green and white striped jerseys and the drinking songs were chanted every few minutes. We had a table with two long benches and there were probably 15 of us around it. After the tab was closed, we decided to head to a new venue. We wound up at a place called Denim though the doorman warned us before we went in that it’d be “us and about 5 other guys”. The place is really nice (and the prices reflect that) inside and probably really crowded on the weekends. There’s a sizeable dance floor though no one was tearing it up on Wednesday. I still hadn’t had dinner and it was well into the night so I decided to head with some friends over to Little Pete’s on South 17th. We arrived just in time as a table had just cleared and the place was pretty much at capacity. Throughout the meal, soccer fans from the bars kept arriving but they were made to wait outside since there wasn’t enough room and we were probably breaking a fire code already! The food at Little Pete’s hit the spot and it was time to call it a night.
I’ve had a lot of fun this week meeting new people and hearing their stories. I have a feeling the partying hasn’t even gotten started but I finally started feeling it today. I’ve pretty much just stayed around the apartment and napped off and on. It feels good to catch back up on some rest.
