Importance of Focus
by Hella ~ September 18th, 2004I spent a bit of time this week worrying about how busy things are going to get once 1st year recruiting gets underway starting September 27th. So many people will tell you how important it is to focus every area of the MBA experience but it is very clear why this is especially important for recruiting. During the Internship Speak sessions this week, many 2nd years voiced their words of advice. More than a couple of them mentioned they’d wished they’d narrowed down their options sooner in the recruiting season as it would have saved them loads of time and energy. So I’m taking that advice now, before things are starting, to develop my focus.
After my 2 years here, I would really like to end up back in Texas. Sure, the idea of living in a new area again sounds good, but when it comes down to it, I want to go back home. Having Texas as a geographic goal does affect the recruiting strategy but I’m thankful that what I’d really like to try for the summer is possible to do there. I’ve strongly considered my options but realize that I want to give investment banking a shot, at least for the summer. Hopefully I’ll be able to line something up in either a Houston or Dallas office.
In order to prepare for recruiting, I attended an overview session on investment banking led by our contact in the Career Management Office. I also listened to 2nd years talk about their experiences this past summer at some of the top banks in NYC. Though I didn’t hear from anyone who worked in Houston, I did make a contact through the Texas Club and I’ll be asking for more about that experience soon. This upcoming week, I’m attending a session on “Getting Ready for Employee Information Sessions” specifically focused on investment banking.
Speaking of the Texas Club, yesterday was our official club day. I took this opportunity to visit the various tables where club representatives were on hand to answer general questions. Again, I’ve decided to focus my involvement in this area, too. I chose to join up with the Outdoor Club and the Texas Club. I’m already looking forward to a couple events with these two groups, namely the winter ski trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and an upcoming Robert Earl Keen concert in Philadelphia. I’m also planning to join the Finance Club and possibly the Energy Club to further help with the career search.

I thought that you told me you didn’t plan on returning to Texas… Oh well, I’m just glad that you came to your senses… ;) I’m also probably going to return to Houston for a summer internship, unless I can find one in Boston. I don’t want to abandon Jie here for the summer if I can help it.
