Jamaica Jerk Hut

Friday night I went with some cohort friends to the Jamaica Jerk Hut down near 15th and South. At first I wasn’t sure how to get to the back veranda, but as I walked to the left of the building, I noticed the small path through the field where it looked like there were some tables. A short walk away I found one of my learning teammates and a couple of other people I knew. We sat and chatted a while then ordered a few appetizers. Soon the rest of the crowd showed up. They’d brought some rum and some Red Stripe. In all, we were nearing 20 people and had one long table that spanned almost the whole patio.

We tried a pitcher of the strawberry lemonade and the fruit punch, but I preferred the fruit punch by far. It had more of a fruit flavor too it (the hint of banana was great) and the texture was almost like a smoothie. As an appetizer, I had a chicken pouch and it was much spicier than I imagined it would be. I soon found out that most of the food would be quite spicy. My plantain stew was pretty good though I didn’t care for the greens (spinach? collard greens? no one knew) that were on top.

This is a great place for a group to meet and have a good time. The service was a bit slow and the prices were a bit high, but with a couple cups of rum punch, it’s definitely a good time. It’s probably best to slather up with some bug spray, though, as the mosquitos will carry you off! Maybe they’ll be less of a problem when it’s not as humid and rainy.
