Muddy Biking
by Hella ~ September 19th, 2004Today’s weather was nice and crisp and I took advantage of it this afternoon with a bike ride along the Schuylkill. I rode from Center City up to Falls Creek Bridge and back which is about a 10-mile trip in total. As usual, the trail was a bit crowded near the Waterworks but it thinned out further up along Kelly Drive. I was surprised to see how high the water was in the river. In fact, it’s actually out of its banks in areas and there are some small rapids near the Strawberry Mansion bridge. Mud was all over the paved trail up near Falls Creek and it was made for a messing outing. Along one of the rowing spectator areas, a wooden dock looks like it’s been completey torn up. I’m not sure it’s salvageable. There is also quite a bit of debris in the river, mostly tree limbs, and it’ll probably take a while for it to clear. I didn’t realize it had rained that much here but I guess the runoff from further upriver was rather significant. Or maybe the Schuylkill does this often?
Anyhow, with a nice relaxing afternoon behind me, it’s now time to get back to the bulk pack readings to prepare for tomorrow’s day of classes.
