Beau Monde
by Hella ~ December 20th, 2004Sunday brunch is always fun to do so two friends and I headed down to the South Street area to catch some eats. The weather was a bit nasty but not too much of an obstacle since we jumped on the subway at City Hall and rode to 5th Street. From 5th we made the easy walk down to Bainbridge and stepped into the restaurant.
They keep up the interior quite well and at noon on a Sunday, this place is hopping. We headed over to the bar for a couple of beverages while we waited for our table. They had some music playing in the background and it was fun to look at the different things people were feasting on at the bar. It was making us quite hungry.
Once we had our seats, we orded up more drinks. I opted for a spicy Bloody Mary along with one of my friends. I had never had one and am not a big fan of tomato juice. The flavor was great, though not my favorite, but my friend who likes them says they were great. The spice-rimmed (it’s like they put the glass in a mixture of steak herbs!) glass was garnished with the traditional celery stalk and also two olives on a toothpick, a lemon, and a red bell pepper floating on the side.
We orded a cheese plate as an appetizer and it came with 3 types of cheeses along with a variety of fresh fruit. Each of the cheeses, including a Brie, was distinctly different. It was served with French bread. The fruit consisted of dried apricots and cranberries, fresh sliced apples, grapes, and a strawberry. This is a great appetizer for sharing and has wonderful flavor.
For the main course, I ordered up a sweet crêpe with bananas, white chocolate, caramel, and powdered sugar. The flavor was oustanding and the textures only enhanced the dish. It was served up nicely on a nice white plate. My friends opted for savory crêpes with either chicken or steak. All of us rated our meals as very delicious. This is definitely a place that must be visited even though it’s not right in Center City.
While there, we saw a waitress serve up some sort of chocolate crêpe with a sauce that’s brought to the table in flames. It made for a spectacular presentation as we watched her try to spread the sauce out over the dish without setting the patron ablaze!
