Jones

Though it’s been several days since I went, I figured I’d talk about Jones, a restaurant around 7th and Chestnut in Old City. I’d heard good things about it so late Monday night I headed over to check it out.

The interior is pretty neat with a very open arrangement. There are dark red-colored lounge chairs and retro-looking lamps at each table. There is a great drop-type ceiling effect with a lot of pot lights. As you first enter the restaurant, there is a bar straight ahead against the right wall. The liquors are showcased with more lighting, but from the back. It kind of has a glowing effect. Overall, the most distinctive feature to me was the use of rough stones around the support columns.

I was sharing food and wanted to try several of the items so we opted for 4 appetizers and a grilled cheese with tomato soup meal. Of the appetizers, the chicken nachos were the largest and a great value, too. We only polished off half of them though they were quite tasty. The black beans gave them a lot of flavor and they weren’t too spicy. We also ordered potato pancakes served with applesauce and sour cream, baked macaroni and cheese, and seared tuna tacos. My overall favorite was the tuna tacos as the meat was absolutely delicious. It was also good with the crunch of the hard taco shell. The baked macaroni and cheese, while tasty, was a bit heavy for my prefernces. The potato pancakes had good flavor and texture but were a touch on the greasy side. The grilled cheese was delicious as was the tomato soup. Both were served piping hot. I chose a Country Club as a beverage which is a simple 50/50 blend of lemonade and iced tea. It was tasty but quite pricey at $2.50 for a small serving.

I like this restaurant and some items are good value for the money, but I think I’d choose another place if I was going to eat within this price range. Namely, I’d rather eat at El Vez, another of the Starr restaurants.
