On the Job

by Hella ~ June 1st, 2005

Today was the start of my summer internship here in NYC. I woke up at 6:00am in order to be sure I’d have plenty of time to go through the routine of getting ready, walking to the subway, catching a transfer, and then riding the rest of the way to Wall Street. I think it’s going to take me around 30-45 minutes to get from the apartment to work each day depending on how long I have to wait on the subways to arrive.

These first three days serve as the orientation to the 10 weeks to come. This morning started with a brief welcome and then we got into an Excel modeling tutorial. The presenter was Irish and she happened to be quite entertaining so that was a good way to start the morning. Then we had a lunch break, listened to a talk on compliance, heard a talk from the senior economist, and finally a Bloomberg training to wrap things up.

After work, we headed over to East River to a mall for a kickoff reception where we mingled around with the other summer interns at the bank. My group (research) only has four people and there are five others in sales and trading. In research, we were assigned a senior mentor, junior mentor, and manager, and it will be quite nice to have the people there to give advice.

One nice thing about bring in research (or S&T) rather than corporate finance is that we are advised to wear business casual every day to work. So this morning, when I first showed up, it seemed like everyone was in a suit and was slightly uncomfortable. Then I realized who the other research people were and was relieved to know that it’d be ok to wear slacks and a nice shirt every day. It should certainly make the summer heat more bearable.

Have a gala time at your internship. I envy you the freedom to wear casuals to office, Wearing suits day in and day out can be more tiring than the work itself.
