Orientation Day 2
by Hella ~ June 2nd, 2005I decided to be a little bit bad this morning and sleep in an extra 30 minutes past my alarm. I was travelling to a different office location and wasn’t sure if this would be a big mistake. But once out of bed, I hustled and headed to the subway. I left my apartment around 7:25am and was in the office by 7:50am; quite good time for walking on both ends and making one transfer.
We started the morning with an overview of the summer program including how we’d be evaluated, the mentor system, and other important stuff. Then we went for a brief HR session on things not to do/say. Pretty basic stuff. Then we enjoyed the first of three breaks for the day. Shortly after that and until lunch, we had a 2 hour session on futures and options. We covered Eurodollar futures and Treasury futures and the presenter was very engaging and explained things super clearly. It was a great 2 hours.
Over lunch we heard from 5 people that were past summer associates. It was a Q&A session moderated by our recruiter and all of the panelists gave some good tips and things to be careful about. It was really nice to have 2 out of 5 of them from research. At the end of the talk, one of the panelists came over and offered to show me the floor I’d be working on. We went down there together and she introduced me to the junior I’ll be working with. After a quick chat, we went into the manager’s office for the introduction.
After meeting who I’ll be working with for the summer, I headed back up to a session on Investor Clients and Hedge Funds. Our trainings have all been delivered by some really good people and this one was no exception. The first half-hour went well since the speaker was careful to go slowly. But we quickly sped up and I was soon finding myself struggling to understand the specifics of some of the examples. Another quick break followed and then we headed into an icebreaker with the Corp Finance summers. We had to go around with a bingo sheet that had facts about random interns and we had to introduce ourselves and figure out which fact went with which person.
We had another break and took the opportunity to go to Starbucks. After sitting around outside we headed up to a Town Hall meeting for the entire firm. It was interesting and timely stuff being discussed. It was also funny to hear the really senior people crack jokes at each other. After some socializing and networking, the day was over and I headed back home. All in all, it was a pretty relaxing day, but I guess the late mornings are over as I’ll need to be in the office at 7am come Monday morning.
