First Week Wrap-up
by Hella ~ June 11th, 2005Friday got off to a rough start when I woke up and realized that I was sleeping through my alarm. I have both a battery-operated alarm and one that plugs into the wall. They are both set for 5:30am and go off within 30 seconds of each other. Long story short, after they went off once, I hit snooze on the battery-operated one and turned off the wall one. Somehow the small battery-operated alarm wound up nested in my blanket and it was going off but I didn’t hear it. So I woke up at 6:56 … and I try to be at work by 7:00!
I decided I’d take a shower (I didn’t want to start the day feeling icky) and then grab a cab to work. I showered, headed down stairs, and quickly caught a cab. Somehow I managed to make it to my desk by 7:14am. Eighteen minutes from bed to desk isn’t bad!
Most of the day was spent processing some data and looking at a couple of models. Maybe next week I’ll be able to build a simple one from start to finish and start focusing and researching one of the companies in depth. But I’m happy with my first week of progress and I have a better grasp over where my time is best spent.
Towards the late afternoon, I took the opportunity of the slower Friday afternoon workload to talk to some recent Wharton grads who sit near me. They had a lot of good advice to give about the particulars of the firm, the group I work in, and the job itself. It’s so very helpful to have them there as I can always get my questions answered. After chatting with them a while, one of my mentors showed up then we went with him to the trading floor so he could finish up a few things. Then we all walked to the subway to go home.
I was feeling a bit tired and didn’t want to make the trek all the way down to Chinatown, so I decided to splurge and take Amtrak. I have a feeling I’ll be riding it more because it can just get so hot on the bus without a good air conditioner.

Amtrak?!?! What kind of commute are you going through?
