Rainy 10 Miler

by Hella ~ July 17th, 2005

Since I’ve been working it seems like my mileage has picked up quite a bit compared to during the school year. This is even more strange because I’m not a fan of running in warmer weather, particularly with high humidity. But I guess with long days during the week, I feel like I better get some good exercise in while I can. This weekend, I ran both yesterday and today, with today’s run being a total soaker.

It started drizzling less than 10 minutes into my run and gradually got harder. By the time I got to my half-way point 5 miles out, I was completely drenched. I felt a little bad walking into the store and dripping all over the floor and handing the cashier three soaked 1-dollar bills, but I was in need of something to drink. I opted for a Sobe Adrenaline Rush energy drink, quite tasty, and two “Little Hugs” juices. The Sobe went down quick as it was really good. I sipped down the first juice and headed back.

The rain came and went in the second half but at one point got just as heavy as the worst parts of the first half. As I came back into the apartment, it was coming down pretty good so again I got water all over the floor and in the elevator. Oh well. It felt good to get in a good workout.

There’s something about my body and running in the rain. My fastest race ever was a 20K in a total downpour most of the way. That was also the last time I’d run any distance over 3 miles without putting bandaids on my nipples. But really, I have a problem with overheating and if the rain is cool, a lot of times it helps me keep going without feeling like I’m going to melt down.
