Brief Break

by Hella ~ October 29th, 2005

Finally the weekend is here. After three full days of interviewing from morning til afternoon (and attending class when possible), I’m glad to be looking out at Saturday morning. It seems that interviewing is a sure fire way to end up with a bad headache at the end of the day. At least when I woke up, it was gone and I was ready to start again.

Yesterday I had four interviews including one final round interview. It was very nice that the firm was able to bring senior people from all of the offices it was hiring into. It prevents the candidates from having to go all the way to the West Coast in a week’s time. It also speeds up the decision process (I’ll have my final result by next week).

So far it looks like I will still be traveling a bit to final rounds. I know for sure I’ll be taking two trips, probably one week apart, with the interviews coming on Friday. It will be nice to get out of Philadelphia but being gone will also strain my coursework again. This year has been pretty tough and midterms have been stressful because I haven’t been putting in the time I thought necessary to do well. So far things have gone ok for me, but I have another test on Monday.

This weekend will be filled with more application reading just like last weekend. With the hectic pace of the past three days, I had expected it, so I won’t have to psyche myself up quite as much as last time. Plus I’ve already gone through a pile of them and feel like I’m more in the groove. I have a method of how I like to go through the files and I make a second or third pass to make sure all my thoughts are clear. Then, after reading my entire set for the week, I make one final check on the whole group to make sure I was consistent across the applications.

Next week I have interviewer training since I’ll be interviewing applicants on campus. I’m looking forward to that but I’m not looking forward to the fact I have to put a suit on to conduct all the interviews. I’m happy with my interview schedule, though, so I should be able to minimize the number of times I actually have to dig out the uncomfortable shoes and the ties.

Good luck with all those interviews Hella (both the ones you give and the ones you have)

I wonder how many people will be kissing your ass saying, “You’re the Wharton Blog guy! I love your posts!” :)

  3. Clear Admit: MBA Admissions Consultants and Counselors Blog

[...] Heading into MBA student-blogger territory, we check back with Marquis (a second year at Stanford) who had some puzzling news from Bain as he moves forward in the strategy-consulting recruiting process. Marquis also offers readers an update on mid-terms at Stanford and the pressures in the second year. Moving on to the city of brotherly love, we here from Hella (a Wharton second-year) who is also in the throes of recruiting, coursework and his job in the MBA admissions office (interviewing candidates and reviewing applications). Rounding out the second-year set, we find Mark summarizing his experiences in DIP week at Harvard Business School. Although it was a relatively quiet blogging week on the first-year MBA student front, we did read some interesting postings from MBAwana, who summarized the latest news from Stanford and Ben Dehghan who talked about grading at Ross/Michigan.
