Walking to School
by Hella ~ October 31st, 2005Trick or treat? Neither. It’s for real this time and not really a treat for anyone. SEPTA went on strike at midnight. I figured this would happen so I woke up early and walked to school. It takes about 45 minutes at a pretty good clip. Round trip I have about a two hour “commute” to look forward to.
SEPTA’s contracts with the Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 234 and United Transportation Union Local 1594 have expired for City Transit, Frontier and Victory Divisions and their leadership have indicated the possibility of a service interruption at 12:01 a.m., Monday, October 31, 2005.
Both sides are working together to try and reach an agreement. While we remain optimistic this can be accomplished, we have prepared an alternate service plan to assist our riders. Brochures, leaflets and special schedules will soon be available at stations and Customer Service locations.
When I first moved to Philadelphia, I heard rumors about something like this happening in the past. Last year there were a few worries that it would happen then. It’s happened now, so we’ll see how long it takes to bargain.

I take it SEPTA is y’alls mass transportation system. That does suck. In Houston, we all drive cars and the traffic is horrible, but our mass transit sucks. But it takes me over 45 minutes one way every day to commute, so I know what you mean. It sucks. When I get out, I’m moving pretty close to where I work so as to not have to deal with the commuting hassle.
Hope SEPTA gets with the program and gets a new contract soon, for your sake!
