Interviewing Prospectives

by Hella ~ November 15th, 2005

On-campus interviews for prospective students who applied to Wharton during round one started this morning. Things are now in full swing, though it’s nice to be through the reading portion of this round. We were given 8-10 applications per week whereas we are probably looking at 10-15 per week in the second round. I’m looking forward to a much less hectic semester (I hope?) so the increase in reading shouldn’t be a big deal.

The first interviews I will conduct are on Wednesday afternoon. I’ve got 3 of them scheduled from 2:15-4:30 so it looks like that will be a suit day. At least SEPTA is running again and I won’t have to walk to school. I just hope it isn’t raining when I’m going or coming from campus.

To prepare for interviewing, we practiced giving, receiving, and observing in a mock interview situation. To make things more serious, we actually got dressed up (ok, business casual, but that’s still dressed up to me). We were also asked not to conduct the mock interviews with our friends. Though the idea of going through the process seemed cheesy at first, it was actually nice to sit down with classmates and talk about important stuff. Sometimes it’s neat to learn about people you thought you knew by asking them more serious questions that you probably wouldn’t otherwise ask. Even though we were serious for the most part, it was hard not to crack a smile when we asked each other “and why is Wharton the right MBA program?” :-) Hopefully I won’t be cracking any smiles for that reason during the real interviews … ok, I probably just jinxed myself.

[...] As we shift gears to the MBA-student blogging community, there are several posts worth highlighting. For starters, we’d like to call your attention to a posting from Hella which describes the Wharton interview training process from the standpoint of the student interviewer. Beyond that, there was an excellent post from MarketWizWannabe on a Wisconsin trip to meet with Warren Buffet and news from BYU-MBA on the decision to increase the MBA class size at BYU. In other on-campus news, Tiy reports briefly on the Net Impact conference at Stanford, Tagad_Tale documents the frenzy of the second year at Tuck and Mark offers a great run down of second-year coursework at HBS.
