Work, times three

The job for now
This afternoon I stopped by the admissions office to pick up my second round applications. As I expected, there were 15 applications waiting for me when I got there. This is up from 8-10 in round one. This is normal though since more people apply in January than way back in October. So it’s going to be more work, but at least I also don’t have to find a job for myself at the same time.

The job to-be
Right before I went into the admissions office, I got a very welcome email. It’s these type of messages that make carrying a BlackBerry all the more pleasant. The email let me know that my pre-employment background check is complete which means I am now eligible to receive my bonus. This will make buying property a much smoother process. This was a big weight lifted since both the employer and I expected it to be done by the first of December. The holidays got in the way and there was some difficulty getting in touch with a former employer.

And class
The first day of class was ok. One of the courses is nothing like I imagined but it is likely to change since the first day can always be interesting due to shopping in the auction. (Aside: Shopping is where people sit in classes they think they want to take. After attending, they decide whether or not to make a bid for the course. Sometimes people also dump classes that didn’t meet their expectations.) My last class of the afternoon is really good, though, so paying attention shouldn’t be difficult. It’s also jam packed with people due to the popularity of both the subject matter and the professor. Not having a lunch break until 1:30 will be a bit annoying but snacking can help that. Unless the professor tends to call on me when I have just stuffed my face (which did happen quite a lot to me and a classmate last semester during our noon class).
This semester, just like last, feels much better than the first year in terms of value I’m taking away. It’s almost entirely from having picked the courses. That’s one of the reasons I like the Wharton curriculum. To some extent, you can avoid really dull classes that you might otherwise have to grin and bear. Hopefully the workload will be bearable … I’m a bit anxious though because this is actually the heaviest course load I’ve carried since enrollment.

    Hella,

Have been following you posts for quiet a few months. Have to mention, I quiet like the new skins/colors.

Just wondering if you you guys pick up and drop off the app. files once a week - every monday ?

My app. for round 2 went complete on the 10th Jan (Tuesday) so am guessing it might already under radar. Is that a right guess ?

Also do the files have to go thro’ students AdCom first before it goes to the your second, professional AdCom member, or just a random order ?

Pure curiosity - am in wonder how you guys handle the 3500+ apps in R2 !

[...] While there’s been some talk of getting back in gear academically (Hella is bracing himself for a heavy courseload and busy few months at Wharton and The Divine Miss N is already swimming in finance homework at LBS, while Noelle has been able to ease back into things at IESE more gradually), the hot topic in the student blogosphere has undeniably been recruiting. Preparation methods vary; from Ben at Ross’ sorting through various metaphors for the process to Mbwana looking into the statistics behind his prospects (and outlining a course to help maximize his chances). While anyone who’s applied for a job or school knows the stress involved in the process, droodoggie makes an interesting comment on the pressure that comes from being placed in such direct competition with classmates and friends. On a humorous note, Miss N learns that the job prospects aren’t the only thing worth getting excited about. More seriously, a few veterans offer up some tips to first year students looking for consulting positions - be sure to check out Marquis‘ thoughts, if this applies to you. [...]
