Freight elevators
by Hella ~ May 7th, 2006I just sold the largest piece of furniture in my apartment and I’ve concluded that having a frieght elevator in the building in a big city is at the top of my priority list. When I first moved in here, I didn’t realize the benefits quite so much. Looking back, moving my things from the loading dock, up the elevator, and down the hall was much easier than moving it down a single flight of stairs directly into my moving truck in Austin. Weight up and down stairs will do a number on your back but with a freight elevator, it’s not so bad.
This summer when I stayed at a friend’s apartment in Manhattan, there was no freight elevator. The elevator in the building in fact was barely operable. It was one of those older types where you manually opened a door to go in. The day I moved out (and thankfully I wasn’t kicked out as I was subletting when it wasn’t permitted), the buyers of the building were inspecting some demo/remodeling progress on various units. They had the elevator tied up. I took all of my belongings from my 5th floor apartment down to street level where I had a rental car parked (in a place where it wasn’t permitted). That is the best workout I’ve had in quite some time, and some how, I managed to load all my things unassisted without getting a ticket. I much prefer the freight elevator route, though, as I was sore all over for three days after that.
Now it’s just the sofa that’s left to go and there is already a confirmed buyer. Hopefully I can arrange a pickup day later in the week so I can head out for a bit of travel the next few days if I so decide.
